A popular course on the teaching and learning marketplace Udemy is based on the book “Become a SuperLearner: Learn Speed Reading & Advanced Memory” by Jonathan A. Levi, Anna Goldentouch, and Lev Goldentouch.
The Udemy class page includes an article which notes:
“In the 1940s at the University of Utah, graduate student Evelyn Wood…had a professor who would change her life.
“‘I handed Dr. Lees a term paper and watched him flip through the 80 pages at a startling rate, grade the paper and hand it back. He appeared to be reading as fast as he could turn the pages.
“He knew the total content and was able to tell me not only what was in it, but also what was missing. Intrigued, I clocked him on other material and found he could read at a rate of 2,500 words a minute.’
“The average college-educated adult can only read at about 300 words a minute. This man’s example set Wood off on a quest that would be derided by many as quackery, and but embraced by many others as brilliance.
“She spent decades seeking out and studying people who could ‘read very fast’, while still understanding and retaining what they were reading…
“From that system she built a business: a series of books, lectures, and the Evelyn Wood Reading Development Institute (which still exists today).” …
But, the article continues:
“Then the craze died down. … Now speed reading’s back, and not just on Udemy. Within the past few years, a number of ‘speed reading apps’ have emerged…”
The Udemy course description says it is “about improving your ability to learn new skills or information quickly and effectively.
“We go far beyond the kinds of ‘speed-reading’ (or glorified skimming) you may have been exposed to, diving into the actual cognitive and neurological factors that make learning easier and more successful.
“We also give you advanced memory techniques to grapple with the huge loads of information you’ll be able to process.”
