Looking for intellect and creativity inside the brain

brainscanIn a CNN report (in 2006), Dr. Sanjay Gupta talked about “looking for creativity inside a human brain” by dissecting one. “The first thing you notice,” he said, “is nothing unusual.

“Most scientists say that current brain imaging technology doesn’t tell you much more.”

But others like Dr. Richard Haier of the University of California, Irvine, “claim they are on the verge of refining imaging techniques to a point that would make traditional intelligence tests obsolete.”

“We can make quantitative assessments of how much gray matter they have in every single area, and we can use that to predict what their IQ might be,” Haier said. “This is in the very early stage, and I think this is going to be very interesting.”

Very interesting stuff, friend…I have been of the opinion that IQ, although an imperfect measurement, does measure intelligence better than any other method. Partly, since not many other methods exist other than judging someone on the spot. But I have always expected that some people’s IQ’s do not match well at all with their true intelligence levels. I believe those neuro-imaging techniques will be an interesting counterbalance, if not make IQ tests obsolete in the future. This site will be much food for thought for me, check out my new (very related blog) from an I/O Psychology student: http://creativityandintelligence.blogspot.com/
